Our commitment

South Caicos is like no other place in the world.

The responsible stewardship of South Caicos’ magnificent natural resources and rich history is our highest priority. As the land and sea share their marvels with us every day, we're committed to paying back this generosity where we can—thanking the island through continued acts of sustainability.

the power of partnership

There is immense value in partnering with local organisations and non-profits that know the environmental and sociological challenges of South Caicos intimately. We have forged partnerships with the School for Field Studies Center for Marine Resource Studies and FisherFolkFirst to collaborate and develop innovative solutions to these challenges.

CORAL REEF RESTORATION

An investment in the health of corals is an investment in the sustained future of our community and environment. Guests at Salterra have the unique opportunity to contribute to our marine conservation efforts on South Caicos.

UTILISING SOLAR ENERGY

The sun shines on South Caicos approximately 350 days per year, and we are partnering with FortisTCI to offset roughly twenty percent of all our energy demands at Salterra by contributing this storm-resilient and renewable form of clean energy to the grid.

IMPROVING WASTE MANAGEMENT

We are collaborating with our partners at Fundación Grupo Puntacana to research innovative waste management solutions and build an integrated waste management strategy for Salterra and South Caicos that diverts organic waste and other materials away from the landfill.

ELIMINATING SINGLE-USE PLASTICS

We are committed to eliminating single-use plastic materials in guest rooms, empowering our guests to be mindful of their plastic waste and water use. All guest rooms are equipped with carbon-filtered water dispensers, reusable bottles, glassware, and amenities that utilise compostable, recycled, and biodegradable materials.

WATER CONSERVATION

Fresh water is a scarce and cherished resource on island, so we collect, desalinate, and treat saltwater for drinking through a reverse osmosis process. Additionally, we utilise highly efficient spray heads and drip irrigation to minimize our landscaping water usage.

LANDSCAPING INTEGRITY

Our landscaping features majority native plants that are salt-tolerant and resistant to low precipitation. These include green buttonwood, white indigo berry, gumbo limbo, thatch palms, railroad vine, and sabal palms that are well-adapted to the conditions of the island. The plants and trees at Salterra conserve our limited fresh water and host the beautiful birds and wildlife of South Caicos.

SOUTH CAICOS CORAL REEF CONSORTIUM

Salterra co-founded the South Caicos Coral Reef Consortium in partnership with the School for Field Studies Center for Marine Resource Studies, the Reef Institute, and the Turks and Caicos Reef Fund. Our mission is to research, replant, and restore the coral reefs of South Caicos, improving the adaptability and resilience of our beautiful reefs.

AVIAN CONSERVATION

We have partnered with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and Darwin Plus to fund and advance critical avian conservation research. Our projects thus far include a survey of Reddish Egrets in North, Middle, and East Caicos, and a nationwide census of American Flamingoes.

TRAINING TOMORROW'S OCEAN STEWARDS

Educating local stakeholders on the immense economic benefit of protecting bonefish populations is integral to bolstering the ecological and economic health of our community. We train and hire local fishermen as bonefish charter guides and captains—building awareness and protecting vulnerable species from overfishing.

REGENERATIVE TOURISM

Youth education and investment in the community are vital to building a better future for South Caicos. Our goal is to help shift the collective consciousness towards more sustainable endeavours that will protect precious natural resources and promote the prosperity of South Caicos.

SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD PROCUREMENT

Salterra is collaborating with FisherFolkFirst, a TCI-based nonprofit organisation committed to empowering and supporting environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable small-scale fisheries. By prioritising local, small-scale fisheries, we can enhance guest experience, reinforce our resort's sense of place, support local economy and livelihoods, and incentivise compliance with environmental regulations, such as the safeguarding of marine protected areas.
