ABOUT US

our story

three generations deep

The Tibbetts family has been building in the Caribbean since 1978 — not as outsiders drawn to paradise, but as islanders who understood its value long before the world caught on. From the Cayman Islands’ first dive resorts to a utility that still powers communities today, the family’s fingerprints are woven into the fabric of Caribbean life. That heritage is the foundation everything at Salterra is built on.

When the COVID-19 pandemic brought tourism to a standstill, South Caicos sat largely unknown to the luxury travel world — pristine, unhurried, and extraordinary. Where others saw uncertainty, the Tibbetts family saw a once-in-a-generation opportunity.

In 2021, JEM Worldwide acquired land on South Caicos. Eighty-five acres. One hundred rooms. And an ambition to create something the Caribbean had never quite seen before.

“Not only did we have to reach an agreement with American Airlines — we had to work with the Turks and Caicos Government to ensure South Caicos Airport was TSA-certified for international flights.” — Michael Tibbetts

The family didn’t wait for infrastructure to catch up. They negotiated directly with American Airlines to launch the first commercial international flight into South Caicos in over 30 years. They transported a baggage scanner by company barge from Florida. They did what it took — because the island was worth it.

Michael’s background in microbiology sharpened something the family already believed: these ecosystems are extraordinary, and fragile. Salterra operates with that awareness at its core — eliminating single-use plastics, co-funding a 400-kilowatt solar system that serves the broader South Caicos community, and co-founding the South Caicos Coral Reef Consortium in 2023 to actively restore the reefs surrounding the resort.

This place existed long before Salterra arrived. The goal is to make sure it endures long after.
